Dave’s Top Super Foods Part Deux

1
This is part 2 in my series on my personal favorite super foods. You can check out part 1 HERE. As I explained in part 1, to make it on my list the food must provide an overall positive health benefit…whether that benefit is disease fighting, muscle building, or metabolism boosting.
So, without further ado, here is part 2! That rhyme was completely unintentional.
6. Eggs
I actually can’t believe I left eggs off of my first list! Experts have gone from telling you to not eat egg yolks due to the cholesterol to encouraging the consumption of egg yolks because it is jam packed full of nutrients. It is so rich in nutrients that some feel its benefits outweigh the drawbacks of the high cholesterol. In conjunction with the egg white which contains the only protein (albumen) that is absorbed into your system immediately with a 100% absorption rate, it makes for almost the perfect food!
7. Broccoli
I remember when the first President Bush remarked on how much he hated broccoli. Some broccoli growers from California decided to teach him a lesson and send 10 tons of broccoli to the White House! Well, President Bush should’ve continued to eat it. This vegetable is one of the richest sources of magnesium, calcium and iron. Did you know broccoli has more vitamin C than oranges? Broccoli is a great side for Salmon, too!
8. Chicken
The grilled or baked variety of course! Low in saturated fat, high in protein, and extremely low in carbs, chicken easily makes my list of top super foods. It is one of the most versatile meats as well. I’m surprised someone hasn’t thought of a way to make chicken into a desert! Oh, wait…they have.
9. Natural Peanut Butter
Natural (often referred to as ‘natty’) peanut butter has come a long way in the last few years. Many people have been turned off due the the separation of the oil and the peanut butter paste. Before eating it, you have to stir the jar until they combine into its final form. Now, there are some great natural peanut butters that require no mixing. Peanut butter is a double edged sword…you get tons of benefits but it does contain a relatively high amount of calories. Consumed moderately, it is a great addition to a healthy diet. It is high in fiber and protein as well as chock full of vitamins and minerals.
10. Oats
I am NOT referring to the instant kind but any oats are better than no oats. Go with the Quaker oats in the cardboard canister for the healthiest option. Oats have been proven to lower cholesterol and help stabilize blood sugar (important for us diabetics). Additionally, it has been shown to boost energy and increase sex drive! It falls under the category of a complex carbohydrate and is full of fiber…both of which leave you satisfied for longer.
That is wraps up part 2 of Dave’s Top Super Foods. Please feel free to leave any of your favorites in the comments below!
