My Silver Tin-Foiled Beauty

They say you never forget your first love. Mine became a lifelong mistress. At the height of our love affair, she greeted me every morning…my Silver Tin-Foiled Beauty. It was a match made in Heaven. It was also a homemade biscuit at the convenience store on my way to work everyday. It had freshly cooked real bacon, a heaping helping of scrambled egg, melted cheese all on a grandma-baked buttermilk biscuit and wrapped in a beautiful, flavor-saving tin foil wrap. On those special mornings, it would be complemented with a deep-fried hash brown packed in a grease-soaked pouch. I had those “special mornings” at least three times a week…and sometimes on weekends as well.
By now you’re probably wondering what the heck I’m talking about. What I’m talking about is my days pre-FFB (before I became a Former Fat Boy…a.k.a. when I was just a Fat Boy) and the indescribable urge to placate my cravings on almost a daily basis without any regard for what I was doing to my body. Looking back now, I can only guess how many calories one of those bad boys had. Combined with the hash browns, my estimate would be around 1000 calories. That was just on my way to work!
Let’s take a closer look and use a more conservative estimate. Let’s say that buscuit and hashbrown were only 500 calories. If I had it 5 days per week, that would be 2500 calories. If I did that for the year, we’re talking 130,000 calories. Since 3500 calories = 1 pound, that is equal to just over 37 pounds! Remember, that is a very conservative calories estimate.
What if, instead, I had just eaten a normal breakfast of 2 eggs (approx. 140 calories), 2 pieces of turkey bacon (approx. 70 calories) and a slice of wheat toast (approx. 50 calories)? We are sitting right around 260 calories which is half of the biscuit and hash brown. That is just looking at the calories and not the other health benefits of eating the normal breakfast like no trans-fats, limited saturated fats, and low in carbs. So breakfast number 2 (what I called the healthy breakfast) is about half the calories which means the resulting pounds would also be cut in half. WOW! Just from one simple change that didn’t even cross my mind until I was in a size 48 waist pants, 300+ pounds, and had type 2 diabetes.
Now obviously it wasn’t just the buscuit but rather a combination of all my poor food choices and a sedentary lifestyle. The question I’d like you to ask yourself: What is my silver tin-foiled beauty? What do I eat regularly that I could eliminate now that could possibly save me in the future?
