About Dave’s Press

bigpants1Yep, that’s me over there.   I’m Dave and I’m a FFB.  For those of you that don’t know what an FFB is…well, it stands for Former Fat Boy.  Three years and 100 pounds later, I can proudly put the “Former” in that title.  It hasn’t taken me three years to lose 100 lbs.  That was actually the easy part.  Keeping it off has proved to be the unending struggle.

Why I Started This Blog

The internet has a virtually unending supply of health and nutrition sites.  Much of the information that is out there is crap, some of it can even be dangerous to your health.  Finding truly good information out there on this topic can be a challenge at times.  The tag line for this blog is health, nutrition, and fitness for the rest of us.  What I mean by this is this is a place where you can cut through all of the supplement sales pitches, bad diets, harmful workouts, and ambitious trainers to get to the real information that will make a difference in your life.

beforeAs I said at the start, I am a FFB.  That’s me over there on the right.  I went to see my doctor in February of 2006 for some numbness in my hands and just always feeling really, really bad.  After telling them why I was visiting, they took my blood.  I knew they didn’t have a test lab on site so they would have to send it out to be tested.  When I received a call from them first thing the next morning, I can honestly say that it one of the scariest moments of my life.  I was told by the nurse that my blood sugar was 350.  I really had no idea what this meant but I knew it must be really, really bad.  When I found out that this was over three times higher than “normal”, I realized just how bad it was.

My doctor had me come back in immediately and they performed a 3-hour glucose tolerance test.  Even after fasting the night before, my blood sugar was over 300.  The doctor diagnosed me with Type 2 Diabetes and I was told I had to drop weight or risk some very serious side effects.  They gave me a 1200-calorie diet plan and set up a diabetes class for me at the local hospital.  At this point, my weight almost matched my blood sugar level!  I was around 300 pounds and needed immediate help.

Maybe its a good thing that I am a tad OCD because losing weight and getting in shape became my sole focus.  I read everything I could get my hands on and scoured the internet to try to find the best of the best.  During that time, I gained a ton of knowledge and simply want to share it with anyone it may help.

A Brief Bio

My real name actually is Dave.   I was born and raised in Georgia and I currently reside here with my wife and two kids.  I work as a Technical Support Manager and do some web design on the side.  I’m 39 years old and am looking forward to 40!  I have recently become a firm believer in Social Networking and believe it can be a powerful tool for the health and fitness community.  I do not claim to be a certified expert in health and nutrition but I have gained a wealth of real world knowledge on the subject and I know where to find answers to any questions I may have.

If you have any questions about this site or need to email me, you can do so at dave@davespress.net.
